Definition in Human Design shows how the defined centers are connected, giving you insight into how energy flows within your design. For some people, this energy flows continuously, while in others, there are separate “islands” of defined centers that aren’t connected.
There are 5 types of definition:
- No Definition (1%): Reflectors only, with no defined centers.
- Single Definition (41%): All defined centers are directly connected to each other.
- Split Definition (46%): Two islands of defined centers that are not connected.
- Triple Split Definition (11%): Three islands of defined centers that are not connected.
- Quadruple Split Definition (1%): Four islands of defined centers that are not connected.
When not all defined centers in your design are connected, cooperation between the islands becomes more difficult. Energy flows less consistently, and you depend on others to bridge the gaps in your design.
Single definition

With Single Definition, all the defined centers are connected to each other, creating a constant flow of energy throughout the design. The defined centers can communicate with each other, fostering a sense of wholeness.
People with Single Definition don’t necessarily need others to feel complete. Processing information and making decisions is also faster and easier for them, as everything is connected and flows smoothly within their design.
Split definition

With Split Definition, your design consists of two separate parts that are not connected. It may feel like there are two distinct aspects of yourself that don’t communicate with each other. As a result, you process information best when you are with others. People with Split Definition are here to learn about collaboration.
Because of this split, you have a natural desire to connect with others. You may feel like you need something that’s missing within yourself, and you can only find it in connection with others. Without others, you might experience a sense of incompleteness.
There’s no need to actively search for the bridges to connect the split—by following your strategy and authority, you will naturally attract the right people who can help create that connection.
Triple split definition

With a Triple Split Definition, you have three separate parts in your design that are not connected. It can feel like there are three distinct parts of you that don’t communicate with each other, each with its own agenda.
For someone with a Triple Split, it’s crucial to be in a collective aura—an environment where different people come together. This is because being around others allows you to process information in diverse ways. Isolation is not ideal with this definition.
It’s also important to take your time when making decisions, as there are three separate parts involved in the process, and it may take a bit longer to come to clarity.
Quadruple split definitie

With a Quadruple Split Definition, you have four distinct parts in your design that are not connected. It can feel like there are four separate parts of you, each with its own agenda, and they don’t communicate with each other. This definition is as rare as a Reflector and means you have at least eight defined centers.
It’s important for you to have different people around you to help connect these parts. You don’t want to become stuck in one connection with a single person, as that limits the other possibilities available to you.
You don’t need to worry about this either. When you follow your strategy and authority, you’ll naturally attract the right people who help complete the connections. Additionally, you need plenty of time and space to process information and make decisions, as having four parts involved takes longer to reach clarity.
