When you look at the body chart, you’ll see the 9 energy centers, each playing a unique role in your Human Design. These centers are where you receive or transmit energy. A colored center is defined, while a white center is undefined or open.
By understanding how your centers work, you gain valuable insight into your strengths, shadows, and how your environment influences you. Defined centers show you where you are naturally powerful, while undefined centers indicate areas where you are more sensitive to the energy of others.
The centers are a crucial part of your Human Design experiment. Here, you’ll find not only your unique power but also the key to breaking free from conditioning that doesn’t belong to you. Discovering and understanding these energy centers is an important step in living in alignment with your true self.
The Defined Energy Centers
In the defined centers, you work with consistent energy. Here, your energy flows in its unique rhythm. It’s a natural energy for you, and you transmit it effortlessly into the world. You can always rely on the energy in these centers because it is a fixed and reliable part of who you are.
These centers are also where others can learn from you. Your defined centers often attract people who have these centers undefined.
When you’re in alignment with your defined centers and give yourself permission to fully be yourself, these are the places where you shine. This is where you can inspire others simply by allowing yourself to be authentically you.
On the shadow side, these are the places where you might hold yourself back. You may not fully express yourself because you feel you’re too much or that your energy is overwhelming to others.
The Undefined Centers
In the undefined centers, you work with inconsistent energy. You don’t always have access to the center’s energy and often depend on others for it.
The undefined centers are full of potential wisdom because this is where you absorb the energy of others. This gives you the opportunity to learn and gain deeper insights, helping you become wiser over time.
These centers are strongly influenced by your environment and are highly susceptible to conditioning. You don’t have consistent access to the energy of these centers; instead, you pick up the energy of others who have the center defined.
Because these centers depend on the people around you, they are often where you are most conditioned. However, in the undefined centers, it’s easy to mistake the energy you feel for your own. But this is not the case! When a center is undefined, you’re always feeling the energy of others.
This doesn’t mean the energy in your undefined centers is never available to you. When you’re near someone with that center defined, you can tap into that energy. The transitions of the planets can also temporarily define a center for you. However, this energy is not consistent or permanent.
The undefined centers also have a powerful side: they can be used to help others. You can attune to the other person’s energy, offering valuable insights and guidance.
To discover who you truly are, it’s important to understand how your environment conditions you and how this affects your life. This awareness allows you to differentiate your own energy from others’ and helps you get closer to your authentic self.
The head center

The Head Center is the place for inspiration, ideas, and asking questions. This is where all ideas and inspiration come in, and then they are processed into something useful—such as opinions, concepts, and insights—in the Ajna Center. This center stimulates the imagination and unique ways of thinking. It is also a pressure center, where mental pressure arises to want to understand, grasp, and know everything.
The defined Head center
When your Head Center is defined, you are a natural source of inspiration for others. You constantly radiate ideas and inspiration into the world, often without even realizing it. This ability allows you to help others find the perfect idea or motivate them with your original thinking.
The ideas and inspiration you receive come from your own energy, which gives you a sense of strength and certainty in your thoughts and insights. You have a natural, consistent flow of inspiration that you carry with you.
The undefined Head center
With an undefined Head Center, you absorb and amplify the thoughts, ideas, and inspiration of those around you. You are inspired by others.
However, there’s a challenge here: many of the thoughts and inspirations running through your mind are not your own. It’s important to be aware of this so you can distinguish between your own ideas and those you’ve picked up from others. You also don’t want to act on every idea you have, as it may not be your own to act upon.
The Ajna center

There are three centers of consciousness, and the Ajna Center is the center for mental consciousness.
The Ajna Center is where opinions, perspectives, beliefs, and conclusions arise. It’s the place where you think, analyze, develop concepts, and store and process information.
The defined ajna center
With a defined Ajna Center, you have a fixed way of thinking and processing information. You see the world through your unique perspective. This is your strength because you can rely on your consistent way of thinking. This allows you to inspire others with your unique insights, opinions, or perspective. You truly give others something to think about.
The undefined ajna center
With an undefined Ajna Center, you are here to be open-minded and not cling to a single opinion or belief. You don’t need to have a strong, fixed viewpoint on everything. Instead, you may see things from multiple perspectives, allowing for a more fluid and adaptable way of thinking.
The throat center

The Throat Center is the center for communication and manifestation. All energy flowing through the body wants to reach the Throat Center so it can be communicated or manifested here.
The defined throat center
With a defined Throat Center, you have a unique way of speaking. Your communication, behavior, and actions express your individuality. You can express yourself freely, without guilt or constant self-doubt. You give yourself permission to truly be yourself. When you speak from a place of certainty, people listen.
The undefined throat center
With an undefined Throat Center, you don’t have a consistent way of communicating. Your expression is influenced by the people around you. You have the ability to express yourself in many different ways and can adapt different voices.
Silence is your strength. When you speak casually, others may not hear you, and you might feel ignored. It’s important to wait until you are invited to speak, allowing your words to be received in the right context.
Het g-center

The G-Center is the center of identity, direction, and love. It aligns you with who you are and where you’re going.
The defined G-Center
With a defined G-Center, you have a strong sense of direction in your life. You feel like you are heading somewhere, and when you are well-attuned to this center, you sense which direction you’re being pulled toward. It’s important for you to trust this pull and surrender to it. You can trust that your higher self knows what’s best for you. Deep down, you know who you are, and your identity is less easily influenced by those around you
The undefined g-center
With an undefined G-Center, you don’t have a consistent sense of identity, direction, or love. You may sometimes feel a little lost in the world, unsure of who you are or where exactly you want to go. There’s nothing wrong with you. You are here to gain wisdom about direction and identity, and you’re a natural guide for others.
The right environment is essential for you. It’s important not to constantly seek direction, love, and identity from others. Instead, focus on discovering what truly resonates with you.
The ego center

This is the center of desire, willpower, motivation, and self-esteem. The desires of this center are mainly focused on the material world, such as money, power, success, and impact.
The Defined Ego Center
With a defined Ego Center, you always have access to a reliable source of willpower and motivation. When you are doing something you truly love, you can accomplish massive amounts of work. You have the drive to push yourself through challenges, lifting both yourself and others to the next level.
The undefined ego center
With an undefined Ego Center, you are here to gain wisdom about what is truly valuable. You can discern who has integrity, who is authentic, and who has real self-confidence.
However, with this center undefined, you don’t have consistent access to motivation or self-worth, which can lead to self-doubt and a constant need to prove yourself. But here’s the truth: you don’t have to prove your worth. That’s not your purpose. You are valuable simply because you exist. You don’t need to do anything more to prove it.
The solar plexus center

This center is the source of our emotions. Here, you experience the full spectrum of emotions and moods. Through this center, we connect with others and with social consciousness.
The defined solar plexus center
With a defined Solar Plexus Center, emotions and feelings are at the core of your life. Your emotions move in waves, from lows to highs.
It’s important not to identify with your emotions, but to observe the wave. Let the emotions flow through you without trying to get rid of them. Allow them to live their life, rather than holding onto or suppressing them.
The undefined solar plexus center
With an undefined Solar Plexus Center, your emotions are inconsistent. You absorb and amplify the emotions of others, which gives you a deep wisdom about emotions. When you step out of someone else’s aura, the emotions will fade—unless you choose to hold onto them.
Because you are conditioned by the emotions of others, it’s crucial not to make emotional decisions.
The sacral center

This is the center of life energy, sexuality, creativity, and pleasure. It’s the source of all energy related to sex and sexuality, including procreation, raising children, and caring for your tribe. The Sacral Center provides the opportunity for sustainable work and energy.
The defined sacral center
With a defined Sacral Center, your passions act as your main compass when it comes to finding your purpose. When you’re doing what truly excites you, what lights you up, you know you’re on the right path. Prioritizing what excites you is key to staying aligned with your purpose.
The undefined sacral center
With an undefined Sacral Center, you’re sensitive to the energy levels of those around you. You absorb and amplify their energy, which makes it easy to operate on borrowed energy. However, you weren’t designed to handle that energy consistently. You were made to balance work with rest. It’s important to learn when enough is enough and listen to your body’s signals for rest.
The spleen center

This is the center for health, well-being, intuition, physical awareness, and time. It’s the center of the immune system, responsible for keeping you safe and healthy. The Spleen Center also houses your survival fears. It operates in the moment, focused on what’s happening right now, using your senses to alert you to potential threats.
The defined spleen center
With a defined Spleen Center, you have consistent access to your intuition. You can use your body awareness to notice what’s happening in your environment. You’re designed to respond spontaneously to what’s needed in the present moment. As you use your senses to stay alert, you can relax in the now, trusting your awareness to guide you when necessary.
The undefined spleen center
With an undefined Spleen Center, you absorb the fears and intuitions of those around you. You can sense who is healthy and who isn’t. It’s important to remember that people with an open Spleen Center can often hold onto things that aren’t healthy for them. Since you also pick up on others’ fears, it’s crucial to regularly check in with yourself and ask if the fears you’re feeling are truly your own.
The root center

This is the center for physical pressure, drive, and ambition. It acts as the adrenaline spark that propels you into action. This center influences how you handle and process stress.
The defined root center
With a defined Root Center, you have consistent access to adrenaline and an initiating energy that drives you through life. This pressure comes from within, not from external sources. You enjoy being productive and are always ready for the next task.
The undefined root center
With an undefined Root Center, you are naturally calm and quiet. The adrenaline energy from this center is not active in you. Instead, you are sensitive to the external pressures and stresses in your environment. You absorb and amplify this stress, which can make you feel pressured by others to be productive and successful. As a result, you may find that you don’t always feel the drive or desire to do things when you’re alone
How to move forward?
If you ask me, we often focus on what’s not good enough about ourselves—what we still lack or need to improve. Instead of fully embodying what’s already there and what makes us unique.
By gaining insight into your centers, you discover what energy is consistently present within you. This gives you the space and permission to fully embrace and embody that energy.
However, in defined centers, we often hold ourselves back—whether out of fear of being “too much,” standing out, or worrying about what others think. But this is exactly where your strength lies: in your unique contribution to the world.
Additionally, you can work on your open centers by deconditioning them. These centers hold wisdom and offer you the opportunity to learn deeply about the themes they represent. You can use these insights not not only for your own growth but also to guide and inspire others.
